Simone Lurçat, the widow of the painter Jean Lurçat (1892-1966), wished to preserve his work and bequeathed the artist's home and studio in Paris, along with the collections and archives it houses, to the Académie des beaux-arts. Through the Foundation Jean et Simone Lurçat, created on 25 November 2010, the Académie aims to preserve and promote the artistic heritage of the painter, a great reviver of tapestry and a major figure in the 20th century art.
Jean Lurçat's house, built in 1925 in the Villa Seurat (Paris 14e) by his brother, the architect André Lurçat, is one of the Parisian masterpieces of the Modern Movement. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1975, it has been awarded the "XXe siècle" label and remains a testament to the collaboration between the 2 brothers.
The Académie des beaux-arts initiated the restoration of the Atelier Lurçat before opening, highlighting André Lurçat's innovative architecture and restoring the Jean Lurçat's living and working environment. The restoration of the house will make it possible to host researchers and present the artist's work to the public.
Since 2010, the Académie des beaux-arts, through the Foundation Jean et Simone Lurçat that it created, has undertaken the patient task of identifying, classifying and repackaging of Jean Lurçat’s archive (correspondence, personal notes, manuscripts of articles and lectures, press cuttings and publications, photographs, exchanges with weaving workshops, collectors, museum curators and gallery owners, etc.). As the owner of the moral and economic rights attached to Jean Lurçat's work, the Académie is also responsible for managing the artist's rights, defending his work and promoting the collections. In 2021, the Académie des beaux-arts organised an exhibition dedicated to the graphic works of Jean Lurçat in the Pavillon Comtesse de Caen at the Palais de l'Institut de France.
