A center for artistic creation and for research, the Casa de Velázquez is a French school abroad under the authority of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. This is what makes it unique among the five French schools abroad: École française d'Athènes, École française de Rome, Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire and École française d'Extrême-Orient.
As a partner of this institution, the Académie des beaux-arts is officially represented on its Governing Council (the Secrétaire perpétuel and a representative) and on the Artistic Council (the Secrétaire perpétuel and six members of the Académie des beaux-arts). The Académie organises the residency competition in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and follows the work of the residents throughout the year.
The Casa de Velázquez is a public scientific, cultural and professional institution whose mission is to develop, through the Institut des Hautes Etudes Hispaniques et Ibériques, creative activities and research on the arts, languages, literature and societies of the Iberian, Latin American and Maghreb countries. It also aims to contribute to the training of artists, researchers and teacher-researchers, and to participate in the development of artistic and scientific exchanges between France and the countries concerned.
Each year, a statutory exhibition of the work of the artists in residence is held in Paris (Pavillon Comtesse de Caen), demonstrating the creative vitality of these young artists.
