Founded in 1666 by Louis XIV, the Académie de France in Rome promotes artistic creation in all its fields through residencies for artists and researchers and a cultural program designed to encourage dialogue between France and Italy in a spirit of openness to Europe and the rest of the world. It is also responsible for the conservation of the Villa Medici, its home since 1803, as well as its gardens and art collections.
The Académie des beaux-arts is an important partner of the Académie de France in Rome. The two institutions maintain regular relations (participation in the selection jury, grants, etc.).
Since 2017, the Académie des beaux-arts has been a partner of the Viva Villa Festival, a festival of artists' residencies abroad that takes place in the autumn and presents the artistic life of the three French schools abroad (Villa Medici, Casa de Velázquez and Villa Kujoyama).
