The Auguste Perret Foundation

Created in 2022, the Auguste Perret – Académie des beaux-arts Foundation aims to defend and promote the work of Auguste Perret and, more generally, the profession of architecture.

To this end, the Foundation aims to:

- preserve and promote Auguste Perret’s apartment in rue Raynouard (Paris, 16th arrondissement). To this end, the Foundation will carry out the necessary conservation and restoration work on the apartment. The apartment will be open to the public during the European Heritage Days and the National Architecture Days.

- award prizes and grants and encourage architects in residency.

- promote the work of Auguste Perret by encouraging the publication of his studies, projects, and writings.

- use the house for any activity that contributes to the achievement of the Foundation's objectives (organisation of meetings, artistic, professional, or cultural events, exhibitions, receptions, etc.).

Auguste Perret (1874-1954)

A visionary architect, a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete and an entrepreneur, Auguste Perret, a member of the Académie des beaux-arts (elected in 1943), is one of the most influential figures in the history of French architecture in the first half of the 20th century.

Born in 1874, Auguste Perret studied at the Ecole des beaux-arts in Paris in the studio of Julien Guadet (1892-1898) before joining the family business with his brothers Gustave and Claude. At the end of the 19th century, he constructed buildings in Paris (rue Sorbier, rue du Faubourg-Poissonnière, rue Benjamin Franklin) and, in 1913, one of his first major projects, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. In 1923, he directed a concrete workshop at the École des beaux-arts, and from 1930 he taught at the École Spéciale d'Architecture.

With his architectural studio, Auguste Perret designed many public buildings in France, including the church of Notre-Dame-du-Raincy (1923), the Mobilier national (1934), the Palais d'Iéna (1939), the Centre d'Énergie Atomique de Saclay (1948-1953), as well as abroad (Great Britain, Algeria and Turkey).

Appointed chief architect for the reconstruction of Le Havre after the Second World War (1946-1960), he designed the Océane Gate (1950), the church of Saint-Joseph (1951) and the Town Hall (1952).

Auguste Perret’s Paris apartment at 51 rue Raynouard (16th arrondissement), designed by him in 1932, is a masterpiece of Art Deco. On his death in 1954, the apartment was bequeathed to the Auguste Perret Association, created by his former students, which preserved it in its original state before bequeathing it to the Académie des beaux-arts.
